STYLISH RUGS UNDER $500 / by Caroline Wilding

With my son getting closer and closer to walking, every room in our house has become a family-friendly space. His sticky fingers, muddy feet, and exorbitant amount of drool test our furniture on an hourly basis. I want my son to feel comfortable exploring our house, so for now I am sticking to furnishings that can withstand an active baby without sacrificing style.

Most of our house has wood floors, so I’ve been on the lookout for reasonably priced, good looking area rugs. Here are some of my top picks- not all are completely family friendly, but the price is right. I’ve also listed three that are over the price point, but I just couldn’t resist!

This leather dressage rug by CB2 is a great durable option for high-traffic areas due to its color, material and flat weave. I love the black edge and tassels on either side of the gray center, giving it a crisp and edgy feeling. Also, the price is great for the large sizes at just $314 for the 9x12. It would be great for an entry/foyer location, and could work well under a dining room table as well.

Jute rugs are a great option for more laid-back and casual interiors. Their neutral color allows you to add almost any color to the pallet. Of the many weave patterns available for jute rugs, I like this basket weave from World Market that comes in seven different sizes at a great price point. I can see using this in a family room or living room. While durable and forgiving, this rug is not ideal for furry friends who love to scratch or owners who like to lounge on the floor.

I don’t know a designer that doesn’t (at least secretly) love Nate Berkus for Target home items. I think he makes some stylish rugs, and you can’t argue with a Target price. Plus, his rugs feature natural fibers—a must-have for durability in climates that test floor materials to the max. I love this cream textured wool rug (7x10 for under $250). The subtle texture and neutral color fit a huge range of interiors and look like an inviting, cozy sweater. The light cream color doesn’t quite pass the family-friendly test, but I would happily put this rug in a living room or bedroom.

Another Nate Berkus for Target shout-out is this alternating flat woven and tufted rug with a subtle diamond pattern. It is also made of natural fibers, and would hold up in more high-traffic areas better than its cream counterpart, due to the contrasting, darker colors. The 7x10 size comes in below $350 making it a great lower-cost option. I would love this for a living room or bedroom.

The hide rug in our living room is one of my favorites due to its durability. We’ve had it for over five years and it still looks new—quite the feat considering our one-year-old spends so much time on it! Hide rugs can be swept like the regular floor, and nothing really sticks to or stains them. This option from One Kings Lane  comes in right below my $500 limit.  I love its organic, luxe texture and brindle color. The mixture of brown, ivory, black, and grey tones allows it to go with a wide variety of colors and styles meaning it will still be able to be useful if you change things up in the future.

I love adding vintage elements to interiors. You can usually buy vintage pieces in much better quality and craftsmanship than what you can find new for the same price, and they add a lived-in patina to an otherwise sterile space. The only problem with vintage rugs is finding the perfect size to fit a larger room. I like this vintage striped Kilim from One Kings Lane  because it has a laid-back vibe and natural color that will compliment a variety of styles. It also comes in a generous size that could work for a smaller living room.

LA-based design studio Commune can do no wrong in my opinion. I am loving this rug that came out of their latest collaboration with West Elm . It has a graphic and strong pattern, but offers a welcome fresh take on the Moroccan Souk rug that has had its long time in the sun. The smaller sizes come in below $500, but getting one big enough for a family room or living room is requires a bit of a splurge.

I love this Colca Rug from West Elm despite it being a little bit of a Cosby sweater. Because it consists  of muted /neutral tones and a geometric pattern, it would be an interesting layering piece in an office or living area. I love the fringed edges and the versatility this color pallet allows with a variety of styles.
